School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. To that end, the school nurse faciliates positive student responses to normal development; promotes health and safety; intervenes with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborates with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.
Our school nurses are all graduates of accredited schools and colleges of nursing and must have a license to practice nursing from the State of Virginia. School nursing is a bit more difficult than working in a hospital or physician's office because in these settings there is support personnel to work with you. In the school setting a nurse works alone and must be prepared to make the right decision. Our school nurses have the educational preparation and skills needed to identify and care for our students needs.
