Due to an incident in the town of Pulaski, we have notified Pulaski Elementary School, Critzer Elementary School, Dublin Elementary School, Pulaski County Middle School, Pulaski County High School, and the School Board Office to shelter in place until the situation is resolved. This is just a precautionary measure and there are no actual issues inside any Pulaski County Public Schools buildings.

Pulaski County Public Schools Press Release regarding Critzer Elementary School Critzer Elementary School, in accordance with guidelines established in its school safety plan, was evacuated at approximately 9 a.m. today when teachers and students reported smelling gas in one wing of the school. Students were transported home by bus or released to their par-ents at approximately 10:30 a.m. after a determination was made that it might be early afternoon before the building could be cleared. The school was inspected by a representative from Atmos Energy and no leak was detected. The Pulaski Fire Department has since cleared the building for occupancy. Pulaski County Public Schools and Atmos Energy will inspect the building again on Thursday morning before the arrival of staff and students as a precautionary measure. We anticipate that Critzer will operate on a regu-lar schedule for Thursday, August 18, 2022. We’d like to offer our sincere thanks to the members of the Pulaski Fire Department, Pulaski County Public Safety, Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Pulaski Police, Pulaski County Emergency Management, Atmos Energy, the faculty and staff of Critzer Elementary, and everyone else who helped for their quick response and professional handling of this sit-uation.

With Pulaski County students back in the classrooms, we want to remind everyone to please use caution during bus hours in the morning and afternoon. In accordance with Virginia law, you must stop for school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop sign when you approach from any direction on a highway, private road or school driveway. Drivers must stop and remain stopped until all persons are clear and the bus moves again. If you on a road with a median or barrier dividing the road, you do not have to stop if the bus is on the other side of the barrier or median, but still be aware of unexpected actions by anyone who may exit the bus and attempt to cross. Also, be aware of reduced speed limit zones near schools during the hours the buses are arriving and exiting the school areas. Help us keep our students safe as they head to school and return home each day.
