PCMS TOTY

Pulaski County Middle School has named Mrs. Jane Honeycutt as their 2022-23 Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Honeycutt has been a teacher for Pulaski County Public Schools for 23 years. She began her career with Dublin Middle School, but with the opening of the new unified middle school, she has spent the past three years with Pulaski County Middle School. She currently teaches seventh grade at PCMS, but during her time she has taught in sixth and eighth-grade classes as well.

Jane Honeycutt graduated high school from St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock. She earned her degree from Bluefield College.

"I am excited for our Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Honeycutt,” Rebecah Smith, Principal at PCMS said. “She is a wonderful and dedicated math teacher who has served our middle school students for several years in Pulaski County. Congratulations!"

“I always wanted to be a teacher,” Mrs. Honeycutt said. “I taught my stuffed animals when I was a younger child.”

As with any job, Mrs. Honeycutt says there are rewarding moments and challenges.

“My favorite thing is watching the children learn and grow into adults,” she said. “As for the challenges, it’s tough to develop a relationship sometimes with them. The other part is convincing a child that they can learn to do math.”

“If I had the chance, I’d like to teach history,” Mrs. Honeycutt said. “History is the most important subject. We need to learn from our past. If I weren’t a teacher, I think I would have been a geologist.”

In the nomination form recommending Mrs. Honeycutt for Teacher of the Year, it described some of the reasons she has found success as a teacher.

“Mrs. Honeycutt has been a math teacher for Pulaski County Public Schools for the past 23 years. She taught sixth, seventh, and eighth grade math, Algebra I, and Geometry at Dublin Middle School during her first 20 years, and has been a seventh-grade math teacher at Pulaski County Middle School the past three years. In addition to teaching, she has coached basketball and track for several years at the middle school level. The best part about teaching is seeing students grow and succeed.  She loves it when she sees her former students and they let her know how much they enjoyed her class. One of her colleagues shared ‘She is an amazing math teacher who has generously shared her knowledge and her time with me.’”

When not working, Mrs. Honeycutt enjoys riding her horse.

She is thankful for the support of her husband Bo Honeycutt, and their two grown children, Kate Bradley and Caroline Honeycutt. She is also thankful for the support of all of her seventh-grade colleagues, especially Misi Gilbert.
