The Pulaski County Public School Board is now accepting applications for a District Superintendent of Schools.   This position is available for the 2023 – 2024 school year. Applicants may submit a letter of interest, resume, reference list and reference letters if available to thurst@pcva.us.

Schools

Pulaski County Public Schools is the home of 5 elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.  Each elementary school also hosts a pre-K program.  Pulaski County High School is the home of an incredible CTE/STEM program that offers our students a chance to learn a trade and prepare for life after high school. 

 

Budget

The division’s annual budget for 2022-2023 is $65,000,000.

Qualifications

The school board has established the following qualifications for the next superintendent of Pulaski County Public Schools:

 

·       Masters degree is required, earned doctorate is preferred

·       Experience as a superintendent or associate/assistant superintendent is preferred.

·       Teaching or public school administration experience in Virginia is preferred.

·       Residency within a 25-mile radius of the school division or adjacent county will be required.

Candidates must meet the legal requirements to be licensed or be eligible for licensure as a superintendent in Virginia. Questions concerning the eligibility requirement should be directed to the Office of Professional Licensure, State Department of Education, P.O. Box 2120, Richmond, VA 23218-2120, Telephone: (804) 371-2522. Licensure must be approved by the State Board of Education, which meets on a quarterly basis.

 

Leadership and Management Skills – The successful candidate will be a team player, comfortable with shared decision-making, a motivator, visionary, creative thinker, and a decisive leader.

 

Personal Characteristics – The successful candidate is a good listener, accessible, caring, and consistent.

 

Student Achievement- The ideal candidate should have a proven record of strong academic and career and technical education achievements, as well as a commitment to supporting extracurricular activities that complement the academic experience. The candidate should also have a demonstrated ability to advance research-based curriculums and programs, with a specific focus on structured literacy.

 

Board-Superintendent Relations – The successful candidate effectively mediates and accommodates different perspectives, provides options and recommendations to the board before accepting board directives.

 

Staff Relations – The successful candidate creates an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect,

maintains open channels of communication to and from staff, and sets a good example for staff

members.

 

Community Relations – The successful candidate effectively advocates for school issues and needs, actively partners with community organizations, and responds to individual concerns in an appropriate manner.

 

School Finance – The successful candidate lobbies for school funding on behalf of the school division, develops and explains rationale for budget to the board and local officials, and offers creative funding solutions.

 

Areas of Expertise – The successful candidate has expertise in curriculum and instruction, budget and finance, and school reform (e.g., strategic planning, total quality management, etc.)

Letter of Interest and Resume are due by Monday, May 22, 2023.  Interviews will be conducted Monday, May 15, 2003 through Wednesday, May 31, 2003 at an undisclosed location.
