Schools earning the award have exhibited educational growth, new and creative curricula, career pipelines, and experiential opportunities for students. Some of these schools, including Pulaski County, have enhanced their Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings for students to offer career pathways leading directly to the workforce.

Another one of the common features of the schools that were recognized is their efforts to create their own future teacher workforce with programs like "Teachers of Tomorrow," which offers students assistance in becoming licensed teachers and then recruits them to stay and work in Pulaski County.

Finding creative ways to battle chronic absenteeism, planning and putting into place programs to help students with additional tutoring before, during, and after school, and working to improve teacher pay and benefits are also common themes for the school systems that were recognized. Other areas considered included school nutrition programs, fine arts, school accreditation, and school system involvement in the community outside of regular school hours.
