The Lady Cougar volleyball program had some impressive showings during the preseason, but in their opening two games of the regular season they’ve come across two of the tougher teams in the Commonwealth, suffering losses to both.

For the JV squad, that turned into a loss at Carroll County in three sets (26-24, 24-26, 6-15) and a loss in two sets to the Giles Spartans (14-25, 17-25).

Leaders for the Lady Cougars in the Giles matchup included Kahlan Dishon with three kills and Libero Gracie Sarver with 10 digs.

“Going forward, the JV group will need to work on stopping the long scoring runs by their opponents,” varsity Head Coach Ted Prol said. “Once they improve on that, they’ll be better able to position themselves for a victory.”

For the varsity squad, the results were very much the same. Against Carroll County they fell in three sets (14-25, 17-25, 15-25). The match against Giles also ended in three sets (14-25, 15-25, 9-25).

Leading the way for the varsity squad was Hannah Keefer with eight kills and two aces. Leah Keefer added 12 assists and two blocks.

“As our varsity moves forward this season, we need to continue to improve on passing and communication,” Coach Prol said. “Those two parts of the game are vital to setup a successful system attack scheme.”

The Lady Cougars are set to return to action Monday, Aug. 29, with a road trip to William Fleming. Wednesday, Aug. 31, will find them at Floyd County. Thursday, Sept. 1, the Lady Cougars will host Carroll County in a return match. JV action is set to begin each night at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity contest at 7 p.m.
