The Lady Cougar volleyball program hosted the Carroll County Cavaliers Tuesday. The end result was a win for the JV squad and a loss for the varsity.

The junior varsity team won in two sets against the Cavaliers, 25-10 and 25-20. This avenged a loss on the road last week to Carroll County.

Emma Sarver earned three aces, 13 points serving, 14 assists, two kills, and four digs. Lylah Minnick earned 12 points off serves, six digs, three aces and three assists. Gracie Sarver earned seven digs. Ellie MacDonald had five kills, an ace, three points serving, and five digs. Haley Melton had four kills and two aces. Krysten Keith earned three kills and two digs.

“Our JV girls played a very well rounded match tonight against a tough Carroll County team,” JV Head Coach Duane Minnick said. “Everyone did their jobs and did them well. The girls have been working hard on serving and it really showed tonight as we only gave up two points on serve errors. We executed our serve receive positions well.  I’ve challenged the girls to go 3-0 this week and we started off great. We’re now 3-1 overall this season. If we keep up the hard work and execute like we did tonight I’m hopeful at the end of the three-game stretch this week we will be 5-1.”

The varsity squad ran into a buzzsaw against the older Cavaliers, falling in three sets, 14-25, 17-25, and 18-25.

Elaina Aust had six digs and 18 assists. Hannah Keefer had 10 kills, three blocks, 14 digs, and 13 serving points. Makenna Yates and Maggie Shartzer earned 11 digs each.

“We played a tough game against Carroll tonight and fought a lot harder than the last showing against them,” Head Coach Kylee Conner said. “We did a lot of good things and our serve receive really helped us stay with Carroll tonight. Maggie Shartzer has really stepped up in practice and been a big impact on the court for us the last couple of games. Overall, I’m proud of the game my girls played tonight.”

The Lady Cougars will be back in action Wednesday with a road trip to Floyd County. Thursday, they’ll travel to Roanoke for a rematch with William Fleming. Next week will features games at home with Cave Spring and on the road against Blacksburg. JV action begins each night at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity contests.
