For Nicolas Woolwine, the transition from the gridiron of Southwest Virginia to the throwing circles and track lanes of West Virginia has been defined by a blue-collar work ethic. A 2024 graduate of Pulaski County High School, Woolwine has traded his Burgundy and Vegas Gold Cougars jersey for the Maroon and Gold of the University of Charleston, where he now competes as a versatile member of the Golden Eagles’ men’s track and field program.

Before arriving in Charleston, Woolwine was a central figure in Pulaski County athletics. At 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, he was a determined and physical presence for the Cougar football team in the competitive River Ridge District.

As a senior linebacker in 2023, his defensive prowess earned him Second-Team All-District and All-Region honors. His high school career was marked by consistent growth; he was a three-year varsity contributor, helping anchor a Pulaski defense known for its toughness.Nic Woolwine 3

Woolwine was equally active during the spring and winter seasons, competing in distance events for the Pulaski County track and cross-country teams. This dual-sport background provided the conditioning and explosive strength that would later allow him to transition into a unique collegiate role.

His journey to the University of Charleston follows a path blazed by his sister, Madison Woolwine. A standout four-year athlete for the Golden Eagles, Madison established herself as a cornerstone of the women’s track and field and cross-country programs. During her collegiate career, she earned First-Team All-MEC honors and was a frequent podium finisher in the 800-meter and 1500-meter events. Like Nicolas, Madison was a premier performer for Pulaski County High School, where she built a reputation as one of the region’s top middle-distance runners before taking her talents to the next level. She is now attending the West Virginia University College of Law.

Since joining the University of Charleston, Woolwine has demonstrated a rare range for a collegiate athlete. While his early collegiate marks focused on middle and long-distance events, he has recently expanded his repertoire into the throwing events.Woolwine 4

His current personal collegiate bests include:

  • 800 Meters: 2:19.12

  • 1500 Meters: 4:37.22 (3rd Place, 2025 MEC Outdoor Championships)

  • 1 Mile: 5:12.08

  • 5000 Meters: 17:38.84

  • Weight Throw: 11.87m

His 2025 season was highlighted by a podium finish at the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Outdoor Championships, where he clocked a personal record of 4:37.22 in the 1500-meter run. Most recently, he has displayed his versatility in the indoor circuit, competing in the weight throw at the Marshall Opener in December 2025 and the Mondo College Invitational in early 2026.

Now a sophomore at Charleston, the Dublin native continues to be a contributing factor in the Golden Eagles' pursuit of MEC dominance. Whether he is on the track or in the throwing ring, Woolwine carries the same Cougar Pride, grit, and determination that defined his high school career in Virginia.
