For many high school athletes, the dream of competing at the next level is a distant goal. For former Pulaski County High School wrestler Anthony Pollash, that dream became a reality this season as he traded the Cougar singlet for the crimson and gold of Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC).

Pollash, a Newport News native who made his mark wrestling in Dublin, is now a key member of the Spartans' roster in Rangely, Colorado. Competing in the 125 and 133-pound weight classes, Pollash has officially made the jump to the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association), one of the most rigorous proving grounds for young wrestlers in the country.

The Transition to the Big Leagues  Pollash 3

The leap from high school wrestling to the collegiate level is notoriously difficult, often described as a "trial by fire." Pollash has jumped straight into the deep end, representing the Spartans in high-stakes events like the NJCAA Coaches Duals.

While the scoreboard at the college level is a different beast than high school, Pollash’s presence on the mat speaks to his tenacity. Standing 5'10"—a significant height advantage for the 125-pound division—Pollash brings a unique physical profile to the Spartans. His ability to maintain his weight while competing against elite wrestlers from programs like Iowa Lakes and Western Wyoming demonstrates a level of discipline and "mat-toughness" that Pulaski County fans came to expect during his high school tenure.

A Foundation of Grit

During his time at Pulaski County High School, Pollash established himself as a dedicated competitor. His recruitment by CNCC was fueled by a desire to keep his wrestling career alive, a goal he successfully achieved through the NCSA recruiting process.

Moving nearly 1,800 miles away from home to pursue a sport is a testament to Pollash’s character. Coaches at the community college level often look for athletes who are willing to embrace the "grind," and Pollash’s willingness to travel across the country to compete in the Rocky Mountain region shows a level of commitment to the sport that few possess.

Looking Ahead

As a freshman, Pollash is currently in the developmental phase of his college career. In the room at CNCC, he is surrounded by top-tier talent and coaching designed to refine his technique and strength. For a 125-pounder with his height, the ceiling for growth is high as he continues to adapt to the faster, more aggressive "college style" of wrestling.

While the wins and losses are part of the learning curve, Anthony Pollash has already achieved what many only talk about: he is a college athlete. From the gyms of Dublin, Virginia, to the mats of Colorado, Pollash is representing the New River Valley with pride, proving that with enough heart, there is always a place for a Cougar to compete.

The Spartan season continues through February, and local fans can follow Pollash’s progress via the Colorado Northwestern Community College athletics page.
