Cougar Growl Staff Report

The Pulaski County High School girls soccer team is off to a fast start this spring, carrying a winning record into a pivotal matchup against Blacksburg this Thursday.
The Lady Cougars currently sit at 2-1-1 on the season following a rigorous opening stretch that featured a home-and-home series and a defensive battle on the road.
The season kicked off March 18 at home against George Wythe. Behind goals from Dani Carroll and Palyn Sweet, the Cougars secured a 2-1 victory over the Maroons. Goalkeeper Mia Lawrence proved to be a wall in the net, recording 16 saves to protect the season-opening win.
The two teams met again on March 24 in Wytheville, resulting in a 3-3 draw. Leona Reed provided the entirety of the Cougars' offense, netting a hat trick. Lawrence was once again busy in the box, finishing the night with 21 saves.
Pulaski County kept the momentum rolling on March 27 during a trip to Carroll County. In a defensive stalemate, Sweet found the back of the net for the only goal of the contest, lifting the Cougars to a 1-0 win. Rachel Woodyard took the reins in goal for the shutout, tallying 16 saves.
The Cougars faced their toughest test of the young season Tuesday night at Dobson Stadium, hosting Cave Spring. The visiting Knights, last year’s state runners-up, proved too much for the home side, handing Pulaski County an 11-0 loss.
The Lady Cougars will look to bounce back and move further above the .500 mark as they travel to face Blacksburg on Thursday.
